An announcement in 1936 that Etienne de Villermont would marry the heiress to a coffee fortune. They did not marry. He was later announced in the gossip columns as the fiancé of Huguette Clark, heir to a copper fortune, but they also never wed.

Letter in French from Etienne de Villermont to Huguette Clark, March 21, 1965. "I join you through my thoughts, and neither distance nor time alters the bond of love of half a life, which will never disappear..."

A cable in French from Huguette Clark to Etienne de Villermont in France in 1959: "Dear Etienne, I hope you have not suffered too much from the great heat and that all is well and that my letter has reached you. I would be happy to hear from you. I am thinking seriously of taking a short stay in France. What do you think of that? Affectionately, Huguette." Apparently she never returned after the 1920s to France, where she was born in 1906.
